Add catalytic converter to Generator exhaust outlet?
 

I'm adding a Kohler 5e Generator to my Donzi 3250 cruiser. I'm doing the install myself and was looking into the exhaust tubing and mufflers etc. Would it be ok to add an automotive 1 7/8" (same as outlet on generator) catalytic converter to the system? I was thinking Generator-catalytic converter- kohler generator muffler-through hull fitting.

Would this work with the wet exhaust? and would it help not smelling the exhuast on the generator while sitting still?

If it will work should I put the converter before or after the muffler?


My goal is to have a good system that is quiet and does not have an odor while running and hanging out on the swim platform.

My first thouhgt is you'll plug the convertor. My second thought is yes you will plug the convertor.

As well as create a very hot piece of metal INSIDE your engine compartment.

I had cruisers for years. What your looking for is called a "pot silencer". Basically you dump gen exhaust water into a 5 gallon bucket, then the overflow of water runs out the side of the boat. (It's about that simple but it requires marinization.....double clamped hoses, marinized metal for the bucket, etc.)

Looks like it....everyone I've ever seen were black and I never paid alot of attention to them (they were just there in the cruisers I owned)

First off, no way a ctalytic converter will work. They have to be RALLY hot and a well maintained genset shouldn't have any odor anyway.
The pot silencer is the way to go if you want quiet. The one kohler installs on is small gensets is too small (about 1-2 gallons in size) in my opinion. Try to get a larger one.
BTW, If your generator smells like gas it's because it's not well maintained, like about 90% of them out there.

Actually that is not correct. California has passed a law and any sub-500hp 2009 marine motors sold the state must meet strict emissions standards. They could only meet those standards with Catalytic Converters so Merc and Volvo HAVE already put those exhaust systems into the market place.

He was talking about running water through it.......
