When to change impeller?

I'm getting ready for the spring conditioning. I want to replace my raw water impeller, but should I do it before of after I start the engines up for the first time since winterizing? I've read after, this way you get the motor primed first and lessen the chance of burning up the new impeller.

I would do it after. Just because the motor will probably start eaiser. But then again after you take the hoses off most of the water runs out of it anyway. If you have stariners might be a different story.
Just grease up the impeller good.

That's what I was thinking to do

Don't use grease on the new impeller. Use liquid dishsoap.

What did you hear about grease? I have always used grease with no problems.

Grease won't wash out and can clog up in the cooling system passages.

I agree this is the way I have done it, dish soap will just wash away.

Hot Stepper 04-03-2009 06:27 PM

What if you use to much soap will it blow bubbles out the exhaust? That would make the onlookers look a little harder:drink:

Vaseline works great. Learned back in the old days of automatic trans rebuilding that Vaseline melts at a very low temp, but stays where it is put until reaching that temp.

Plus, it does not attack rubber impeller vanes or hoses like grease or oil does.

I use it on my impellers and have no trouble.

Merc manual recommends dish soap.

I always use dish soap because your hands clean up so much easier.

txriverrat2001 04-04-2009 12:58 PM

Use soap or a silicone lube of some sort - do not use grease. We change impellers and housings every year - no matter what. It's cheap insurance.

i used too much dish soap the last time.... the bubble went areound my whole boat. then i farted, it was all awkward from there on out.

but seriously, dish soap works awesome and i feel it is more slippery. pertroleum jelly works too
