Small hole in Bravo?
I MAY be getting Alzheimers, but, when I fired my boat up on the muffs a few days ago I noticed water coming out a small "V" shaped hole in the front [closest to the stern] of the outdrive, its about 1/8th inch deep, and I am pretty sure it WASN'T there last time I ran the boat on muffs? I checked the drive oil and its not milky, and water just seems to run in and drain out of this cavity?, I was wondering if I MAYBE nicked it while launching or pulling the boat out? If so, could I just "JB Weld" the hole up?, or should I just leave it?
The hole is located about 3" up from the top of the "cone" and I am running a Bravo 1 drive, any help/input is always appreciated! Thanks! Michael |
That is the internal speedo pick up. You should not be getting any water out of it on the muffs though. You may have a bad seal between the upper and lower.
|
Will it hurt anything to leave it? Can it leaked into the boat? Would I be better off to seal it up and not use the speedoV
|
Should I just leave it as is? Or can water leak into the boat? Would it be easier to seal it up and bot have a speedo?
|
It can't leak into the boat, but if that seal is bad, then others could be as well. That could lead to water getting in the gear lube.

WHEW!, glad its not something "terminal". Is it something that's hard to fix? I assume I would have to drop and split the drive? I am thinking if I check the drive oil every couple of days and its not "milky" I should be OK? What do you think Griff?, Thanks again for the input!

Splitting the upper and lower and replacing the seals is actually very easy. I really don't work on drives hardly ever and I have done this.
I would wait until you are about ready for lube change and then replace the seals between the upper and lower. Until then keep a good eye on it. The only thing I wonder is if its really not the seals in between and water is just overflowing and coming in the tube. There is a plastic nipple on the front of the upper above the caviation plate. That or the internal speedo tube in the lower is punctured from somebody trying to drill out debris. |
Funny you should mention that! I had to replace the alternator on the boat and when I fired it on the muffs after the install there was NO water out the speedo tube? Both before I fired the boat and after I shut it off there was no water out the tube.
I checked the drive oil and there was MAYBE a teaspoon of water and the oil was still green, not milky. I will keep an eye on it and have it checked when I have the drive serviced mid season. Thanks for the Input Griff! I really appreciate it! Michael |
