Below water exhaust block off
 

Hey guys,

Ok so here's the deal. A friend of mine is working on his boat (1985 Scarab II w/ dual 454's/TRS outdrives) and has a leak in the Y-pipe for the "below water" exhaust. Now he doesn't use the below water exhaust (all above water now with chrome and all the pretty stuff now), and instead of trying to find a used part (the marina has told him they don't make the part anymore) he wants to just block it off with a plate or gasket to prevent water from flowing in when not under way.

The question is, what, if any, bad things can this cause? Is there a better way to handle this (besides just finding a newer Y-pipe and replacing it)?

Are you talking about blocking it off outside the boat?If he can figure a way it shouldn't cause any problem with anything else especially beings he's running through hull exhaust.I believe the Y pipe you are talking about is actually made into the inner transom plate.There are usually several of those on ebay cheap.Only real problem is you have to pull the engine to change it.

Ditch the entire Y-pipe and throw it over the side. Fit a couple of joiner in the pipe from the riser ends to the through hull tips. Use that Hardin SS Blockoff plate or make one yourself using the Y-Pipe joint flange as a template, silicon and loctite the bad boy in place and have done with it. With that plate blocked off properly, no water is coming in. You just need to make sure your remaining exhaust fittings are also good and correct. You don't need that Y-Pipe.
