Boat Wiring
I have to pull my engines this winter and I was going to repaint the engine bay and rewire. Does anyone make "kits" for twin engines. If not does anyone have suggestions on wire type, sizes, diagrams?
Thanks |
I think CP sells harnesses. The engine wiring code is usually pretty standard, but depending on accessories the color code will be different for other things.
|
merc harneses are the best. as for color codes:
tan=temp tanw/blue stripe=alarm-oiltemp,water temp, oil psi black=ground red=positive purple=ignition purple with red stripe(?)=trim up limit switch grey=tach brown=oil temp or trim blue=oil psi yelow=start/ crank green w/white stripe=trim down bluew/white stripe=trim up |
Where do you buy Mercury harness?
Where do you buy Mercury harness? Are they better than the CP harness? How much do they cost? Do they have a terminal block like the CP shows?
Thansk |
I'd buy the CP Harness if I had to do mine over again, they're apparently longer and the wire jackets are better. If you're doing a custom re-wire, the CP kits will allow you to route the wires where you want, I found the stock merc wiring too short to run where I needed it.
I posted a twin engine wiring diagram on here for someone a while ago from the merc manual, do a search and it should come up. Let me know if you need any specific diagrams and I'll see what I can do. Good Luck! |
Here is what you need all at the right price.

Most important thing for boat wire is make sure that you use tinned wire. It will not corrode like the plain copper wire. Even if you are in salt it will last much better.
|
Are you looking to rewire the boat or replace the engine harnesses? If you are rewiring, make sure you use big enough cable for the main engine power cables.

And good flat braided gounds to the engine and heads do not use battery cables for grounding but flat braided gounds work best.
I have use battery cable for my grounds never thought to ground heads also |
Yep we have several harness' to make your life a little easier when re-wiring not just your engine but the entire boat also. All harness' come with complete wiring diagrams to make it as simple as possible. You can see these diagrams on our website under Tech Support. Let us know if we can help!

mercury harnesses are the best. they come in different lengths. . as for grounds as audio said tinned multi strand wire is best. as well use tinned ends or lugs. and crimp donot solder. and use adhesive lines shrink tube.
|
Monstaaa: Solder is ok if you use solder with a low amount of Rosin. I tend to use silver solder as it has a low flow point and no rosin. It is expensive compared to other solders but works so much better. Rosin is an acid so if you do not get it off the wire over time it can cause more issues then a crimp.

http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/c/ALL6I/I...anel+Harnesses http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/mm5/merch...ory_Code=ALL6I So has anybody used these wiring harnesses ?? I was just about to order a engine harness last night & ran accross this & thought its definatly worth checking into since its $60.00 cheaper.. I am needing a 9 pin engine harness for a custom application (like the ones sold by both these vendors 6ft of wire, merc type cannon plug ect..) Anybody have any experiance with them ?? |
Anybody ??

CPs Harnesses are made by the same person that makes them for myself, the harness for Whipples kits and so on, alot of us out there use this person. The harness also come in different lenghts. He also does custom fitted harness. But if you are only doing one boat, it will be $$$. Buy, it from CP, because you are not going to get dealer or WD pricing and he doesn't sell direct to the public.

I am looking at the 9 pin merc style plug with 6' of wire as they both have & appear to look pretty much the same & yeah I only need 1 kit as I am rigging a single.. Are you saying they come from the same mfg. ?? Thanks, Scott |
