Help with starter wires!!! Pics attached

As many of you know I lost a starter at LC Poker Run...Well I had it replaced and last weekend it stopped working agan. Figured I just ot a junk starter and was goin to replace it again. Well when I started pulling it apart I noticed there is a loose wire

1) There is a yellow/red wire and a orange wiure attached that go to the fuse box on side of motor

2)The ground wire is attached

3) The constant ground is attached

4)There is a red wire that runs to the fuse box on top center of the motor that is not attached to anything.

this could be nothing but I am hoping the installer just put a nut on loose and this is my only problem. Check it out and let me know. Sorry for thecrappy pics but its tight space in there.

Anyone????

That small red wire goes with the large red wire that comes directly from the battery. How could it have come off is my question? And you said it worked without it attached? That would power the solenoid mounted next to the reset switch on the motor.Hook it up and see how it goes.

Hooking it up and trying is simpler than it sounds... Have to drop half the left side of the motor to even have access to it... How many wires total run to a starter and where does each come from? You got power straight from battery to the large post etc etc...

Pull the exhaust manifold and then reach in from the top?

FuelinAround 10-04-2009 09:27 AM

Yeh that's what I had to do but them SOBs are heavy and really only want to have to take it off and put it on once

CcanDo 10-04-2009 10:56 AM

Use a test lead w/alligator clips

johnnyboatman 10-04-2009 01:28 PM

well if the eyelet is small i would think that it would go to the small bolt

Throttle Fever 10-04-2009 01:56 PM

Great Idea

Like CcanDo said reach in with a alligator clip and then to a battery or handy 12 volt source until you determine whether or not you need it.

Pulled the starter today and took it to the tester... Solenoid was bad... So I replaced it with a duralast gold that matched it identically and has a life time offer. Autozone only charged me $50 for itand has life tine replacemennt so figured it was worth a try... Installing it as we speak

If the wire thats hanging has a small eye on it (cant tell from pic) it goes on small stud on the outside of starter sol. There are two small ones. the one closest to block is the yellow/red one that energizes sol to crank eng. the one on the other side sends 12 volts to coil when cranking to bypass resistor wire. some systems dont use this wire but they are still in the harness.

I'm guessing its not a marine grade starter with spark protection then??????

FuelinAround 10-04-2009 09:41 PM

No sir.....I got it installed and it works well...what is the spark protection for? I just wanted to make sure it was a heavy duty one with all metal internal gears....

P.s. That wire was for my corsica silent choice exhaust... I got in unhooked and wired open so no need for it

Throttle Fever 10-04-2009 09:45 PM

You want a marine type starter assembly. Gas fumes sort of linger low in the bilge. So any spark makes for a h@ll of a boom. Glad you got it running. A+

Ok did some research... Thanks griff... I'm going to use this starter to winterize with and try and purchase a new one before next season. Anyone know a good source to purchase a 454 starter from?

Anyone got a site for mercruiser starters for me?

wet_rat 10-06-2009 02:10 AM

Had good success here:

saw this one on another site:

Unless its rated for marine use, give it back to them and I'll send you a pine coffin..
