Alternator Question???

I have a stock 454EFI in my 95 Baja, I would like to upgrade to a high amp [140+ amp] alternator, but, all of the alternators I have looked at are either 3 wire or 1 wire? I have 4 wires attached to my alternator, 1 large red, and 1 small red wire and 1 large and 1 small black wires, I understand the large red is the charge wire, and the large black is ground [I think?] the smaller red could be for an "exciter" wire? but, I could be wrong

Does anyone know "for sure" what these wires are for? and/or can I go to a 1 wire or 3 wire set up?

Thanks!
Michael

Ohio Generator can take your stock one and push it up to 280amps
