Hyd steering problems
I have a sea star single ram hyd steering system connected to a single trs drive. I can't seem to get the play out of it. I've bled the system up by the wheel and it appears to have all the air out. The play is much better then when I got the boat but still far from correct. I've looked extensively for any leaks and found nothing.
Does anyone know if there are any internal wear items that might go bad? It does have a fitting out at the end of the system. It's on the bottom side of the ram. Should I try bleeding that? I'm not real sure what to try next. Any ideas would be great. Thanks! |
Any pictures? I thought seastar was for outboards?

on mine they told me to bleed the longest point frist . the other thing was the cly. can have air in it, try bleeding that .

Hum. You might be right because the only people that I know who have sea star have outboards. The boat is a 1980 excalibur 27. It has a sea star cylinder and helm connected to a latham bracket on the outdrive.
This is my 1st external hydralic steering setup and 1st i/o. I've had some little outboard hot rods with cables but had to get something more family friendly. I'll get some pics and I'm going to look into the outboard thing. You got me nervous. |
You need to follow the instructions to bleed it right. I have a copy of them but cant post them. PM me your email and I will send it to you.
They make systems for O/B, I/O and straight inboards. |

They make systems for O/B, I/O and straight inboards. I did find out that it is an outboard system that has been converted to an I/O setup. The install is very clean and seems to be done well. I'm just concerned now whether it can handle a 500+hp blower motor and 80mph. What do you guys think? Thanks for your help. |
E-mail sent. I just looked on west marine and the o/b setup is rated for 300HP single eng.and600HP dual eng
