Question: Plumbing a Intercooler and sea strainer
Im am installing a complete new set up here... I new 509 with a 1071 blower and intercooler that makes over 800+ and I will be adding in a sea stainer, Intercooler and I have a stock Mercruiser sea pump....Will this work alone or do I need to get an additional pump for the intercooler alone...also whats the proper route of piping in all of these new goodies
Thanks Joe |
The best way is to have a pick up on the back of the boat that is forced feed just for the IC and it's own sea strainer. You do not want to rob any water that the motor needs for cooling. And you really do not need to run water in the IC at idle or low speeds. This is what I have learned and found to be the best set up for a IC.

I have heard that from one other person to do the pick up and run through hull dumps out of the back..... I have a 16an going into the IC and a 12an coming out which is also what I was told to run.. I may go that route
Thanks.... |
go to teague,s website and look up tech tips,it shows you exactly how to do it.-12 to strainer,-12 from strainer to cooler,2 -10 from cooler to overboard dumps.they sell a real nice-12 force feed pickup, you don,t want to run water at idle, that is why you use the force feed pickup.

I will bring up another option. There is also a concern that having a cooler with no water at idle getting hot and then being slammed with cold water can cause fatigue of the cooler and crack. I run a dual impeller pump with a line running to another fine particle sea strainer to not plug the cooler with the things a normal strainer would pass. I also run a check valve on the water exit of the cooler as a sea pump can pull from the weakest source and that can be the water dump side of the cooler. My 600 CI 16:71 blower engine idles just fine with the cooler getting water at all times.

I have a hugh KPM strainer available that will handle both no problem. I rau 2 blower 468's off of it so a single and an IC will be no issue. 6"X 18"

I know this is an old thread but do you have a pic of how you routed your sea strainer and sans strainer? |
