Set Screw Removal
 

I am replacing my Q-jet with a 850 holley but cant get the set screws out of the intake for the holley bolt pattern. Any ideas how to remove these bastards??? I have used heat and bent 3 allens and broke one scocket/allen set up. One came out but the other 3 won't budge. Any one have this issue if so what did you do to remove thiem. Thanks in advance.

They must be seized in. You will probably have to drill them out most of the way. Use left handed rotation drill bits.

I just had to take out several that where stuck exactly like yours. One was an oil galley plug in an brand new engine that I could not use a drill on, so I used gas welder to get it hot enought to come out. Others I used propane torch and just held it on for along time. They all came out with no problems.

Just buy a new intake & save yourself a ton of hassle & gain some performance while you're at it.
I tried to do the same thing you're trying to do years ago & I just decided to spend $300 & get some new sh!t.

warm up the intake stud with a propane torch and tap the stud top with a hammer,,also if you take some candle wax while the stud is still warm it may penetrate the threads in the intake so they can be removed..

Cool thanks for all the replies. Not buying a new intake just picked the motor up from the machine shop.

If its an aluminum intake, go to the drug store and buy a bottle of tincture of iodine. Soak the screws repeatedly for a day and for some reason, it will eat away at the aluminum oxide that is acting like loc tite and allow removal of the screws. Age old trick to release things frozen in aluminum.

We use it regularily to loosen aluminum A/C fittings, alternator case bolts etc. Not fast but it works without taking the threads with it.
