Transom Rot?

Is there a quick and easy way to check for transom rot without hiring a surveyor? I think I read somewhere to use a plastic mallet and tap on the surface. Does that really work?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A knuckle works fine...............

Somehow...I smirked seeing someone with the name "Angermgmt" talking about using his knuckles on the transom.....

Use a fist or knuckle to tap on the transom. A short solid return is what you're looking for. It should also be uniform in sound in all areas. A hollow sound amid a solid sound would indicate rot or delamination.

This method would not indicate moisture. You need a meter for that. Just because it's wet doesn't mean it rotted. It does mean that the potential is there for rot to form.

Another good test... Stand on the drives and them trying jumping up and down on them. Observe the transom area while doing so. If you see the transom flex, you've got problems.

Tape a peice of clear plastic to the back, taping the plastic around the edges so it is 100% sealed. Then see if condensation forms on the inside of the plastic after sitting a day or so.
