382 Formula headliner R&R
 

I have a 96 Formula, 382. It has a sagging headliner that I would like to replace this winter. I had the upper trim removed last winter to replace the interior speakers, but couldn't figure out how to remove the ceiling panels. There are three panels, and the outer panels seem to be pinched. Do I need to remove the interior walls (head and closet) to remove the ceiling panels ? Has anyone ever done an interior makeover on a Formula ?

I didn't remove mine (2002) but I ran wires across the boat above the headliner. The center section has screws inside the overhead lights that hold the center section up. I assume once that is down the outer sections can be removed.......it really made me nervous driving screws up into the deck from underneath but that's how it was installed.

Here are some pictures to assist removal.

Remove the White U shape brace by removing the screws from the back side. Remove screws that hold the valance from the back side.

Go to the other end and remove screws that hold valance in place and drop valance out of the way.
Now, you will see the the ceiling is already falling down remove the screws that hold the hatch rings.
You should either take a 2x2 cut to length from the bench to the ceiling or get someone to help you hold the ceiling up so it does not fall or bend and break.
Then pull the ceiling toward the front and it will separate from the center piece and around the cabinet.

I had the valance off both sides, and the front portion above the vee berth out. I removed the lights and screws from the center ceiling section and dropped down, but I could not get it pulled away from the wall of the head or closet. It still should have given me enough room to slide the outer panels out. With the hatch rings removed, the panels were loose, but still stuck along the outer sides of the boat, towards the hull. I couldn't see any screws or othe attachments, but they were obviously not going anywhere. Was I missing something ?

OK, the cabinetry fits very snug/tight to the top where the panels slide through. I was able to pull them out. Yes it was tough. If you look in the bathroom area, the ceiling in there is not part of the same panel. In the bathroom area the cloth was just glued to the ceiling.

Yup, I did notice the bathroom ceiling was not part of the headliner panel.
I'll try it again this weekend. Thanks a lot for the input.
