Oil coolers

I have a sutphen rum runner with twin sbc. They currently have oil coolers in line. Is this overkill for this setup? Do I need the oil coolers? I am thinking about cleaning up the engine room this winter and was thinking about eliminating them if not necessary. What are the benefits besides increased cooling?

Yes, you need them. The benefits are they keep the oil cool, and prevent the engine from puking. The load on marine engines is so great that the block cooling wont keep up with the heat generated by the engine, hence the external cooler.

You could take them out, but your engine wont last more than an hour TOPS while running. You have to control the oil temps, and that is the only way to really do it effectively.
