Dipstick oil change?

Hi All,

My boat came with these ~4' hoses from the sumps with quick connect fittings on the end to pull oil out.

I now see a few options to remove oil through the dipstick tube instead, looks to be a good idea and I could get rid of these hoses.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Randy

You never get all the oil out thru the dip stick tube. The sump tubes if done the right sizze can be fished thru the transom drain hole which saves time and mess, otherwise you can connect to a small electric pump and into a bucket. You can also fill thru the same hole if you buy oil in gallons.

My $.02

I agree with Cig3...

On one of my boats, I had the dipstick oil drain set-up and I hated it, knowing that any real gunk was still probably in the bottom of the pan. (Even though I changed it quite regularly)

When I re-rigged a 20' jet boat a couple years ago, I ran a fitting on oil pan drain line to the back of the transom with a "plug" in it like the bilge plug.

It worked awesome for sure. On the boat I have now, I will probably do the same thing I did on the Jet...

Thanks for the reply's, looks like the hoses stay.

I just got all excited learning from the SkyMall magazine that Benz technicians do it through the dipsitck hole.

That's because they would have to get under the car and get dirty.

Mine would leave a qt of oil in by dipstick method. Always had to us a vaccum pump with a small tube that fit in the dipstick to reach the very bottom

I am with everyone else - I had bad luck with the dipstick.

I eventually hung underneath the motors and put in some fittings on which I ran some hose - I just hook it up to a drill pump and let it rip!!

As stated by everyone. Warm the oil and drain it through the pan drains.

Also, if your oil filters are inverted (threads down), poke a hole in the top of the filter and let the oil drain down into the pan as well for a LOT less mess.

Pull/drain whatever, the oil cooler is still full of oil.

Anyone know of a good source for the oil pan hose drain kit for a GEN V BBC? I have to suck the oil out of the pan through the dipstick with a small hose, it takes forever, and I'm always concerned about leaving something behind.

I use a BG driveline service center... I work in a dealership... i made an adaptor to pull from the dipstick tube. i have had my engine apart a few times and the tube runs to the bottom. but still i pull the plug and made a nice drainpan to fit under the engine. i still get about a half quart from the pan. then i use the driveline deal to suck the pan empty, put the plug in and fill her back up.

+2 on the cooler still being full. when i primed my engine (the oil change takes 8qts) it took 13 quarts of oil. the cooler and lines hold a lot of oil. i change mine very frquently as well. Learned from Bob Madera that oil is wayyyyy cheaper than metal. plus, wo really wants to run that other stuff and have to get it analyzed all the time since you never really trust it.

The engine sumps and dipstick tubes on these engines is made for that to work properly.

Mercury sells several kits.
