496 Manifolds on a 454

Getting ready to undertake this project as a few nicer days are in the forecast. I have the manifolds and a brand new 454manifold bolt set but I'm still working on what to do about the oil filter and shift mechanism mounts. Have any of you don't this conversion? What did you do about these problems?

I've seen a couple 496 remote oil filter mount assemblies on ebay but there aren't any available at the moment. What about the shift mechanism?

Any help here?

I just did mine. I made a polished aluminum bracket for the oil filter & mounted to the inside transom, did the same with shift bracket and module as well, just ran an additional grounding wire for the module & grounded to the rear of the engine. This worked out great & opened things up too.

That sounds like an interesting option. I'd love to see pics of that installation. Did you just manufacture a bracket for the existing oil filter adapter or come up with a replacement? Did you maintain the factory oil/PS cooler? I was wondering if an auto racing oil filter relocation kit might not work.

I'd like to see pics also

I built mine out a couple pieces of 4" "L" aluminum. Welded together with the center cut and the ends trimmed off. There was already bolt/stud hole drilled into the manifolds.

Do they bolt up to the 454? What's different?

Just mount the remote oil filter using a piece of 2" angle aluminum and mount the shifter linkage assembly on the transom as well. It will clean up the engine a lot and its simple.

Has anyone done just this conversion with no other mods? I am curious as what the gains were from just the manifolds

I've done a ton of other mods before I bought mine.

The 496 setup might flow more (on paper it looks MUCH better), but I did mine for a single reason: dry joint.

I used the aluminum manifolds, but set them up for FWC (boat in saltwater). The setup should go many, many years. Cheap. Effective.
