syncing engine rpm

Took out my first twin yesterday and noticed the rpms were about 500 off when both sticks were in the same position. It was choppy so I couldn't go above 4k rpms but for the short time I did it seemed they caught up at around 4k . So not sure if the gauges are off ..??
What's the best way to sync the motors? They are Tyler crockett 502 mpi

I do it by sound. A fast oscillation is not in sync. Get that ocsillation as slow and long lasting as possible. Then, the engines are in sync.

X 2. The only thing that sounds any better is trips. I wouldn't be to concerned until you get a little more seat time and go out on a calmer day. Your tabs / trims position along with over all conditions makes a big diff.

When your sinked you get a nice hummmming in your ears especially with some headers.. Be sure a and check your trim and tab position in ref to your gauges from one side to the other also when it's out of the water. Good luck.

thanx guys.

I am guessing that once you get the engines synched if your sticks are not even you can adjust them by manipulating the cable connections at the helm/throttles?

By and install a Snyc gauge you will love it. Like said above when it gauge hits the middle and both engines running the same its a sound you will never forget. Like a smooth running sewing machine:drink:

Thats what I was thinking.

He is as serious as a heart attack. Never used one but have seen them. As stated earlier, it is a sound you will know when they are running in Harmony.

Wow, nice. I did not know they where that cheap.

My tach's are not even close. But once that gauge is in the middle you can hear they are both in sync.

I thought came came standard on performance twins:grinser010:

tcelano 05-12-2011 11:28 AM

Yes, they exist. I've used them on yachts back before the days of automatic synchronizers. It's just a meter that points straight up when the two tach signals are the same.

pitts1313 05-12-2011 11:41 AM

I'm thinking a want one of these meters? Are these sync meters accurate and or very hard to install? does the meter read the tach's for info or does it read from the engines? Or do i jsut need to let this be like a Zen thing and go by ear?

ICDEDPPL 05-12-2011 01:23 PM

does the gage just read the two 2 tachs and tell you whether they read the same ? as long as the tachs are accurate wouldn't it be the same as looking at the tachs and comparing the 2 ?
Unless it can control and sync the engine r p m I guess I just don't see the point.

EDIT: just spoke to Livorsi that gauge has been discontinued, due to being kinda useless lol

LOL, just got email from livorsi stating haven't had any in a year. Livorsi probably wonder where all these inquiries are generating from.

Darn, I was thinking about getting one! I could put it right next to my dilitihum crystal meter.... Guess it would be a good conversation piece though.

if that dilithium crystal meter makes a boat sound, run, and look better I'll buy one:grinser010:

Ok now I know what you guys re talking about! Went out today and yes that is a sweet sound of the twins running at 4K rpms. Like a sowing machine:drink:
I love twins!

The tach does catch up about 4K rpms so its the gauge, Livorsi said send it they`ll rebuilt it no problem.

i believe it just reads the tach signals from the 2 engines

GeeterB 05-25-2011 06:17 AM

there is not a better boating sound than hearing twins get into synch! I miss having twins for that reason and docking. Educating your wife/girlfriend on how to get them running in synch and properly trim out the drives is fun too.

Sydwayz 05-25-2011 06:40 AM

Don't forget about your props. You could have a prop that is not in "sync" with the other, that will not allow the engines to sync as easily as you'd expect.

+1

I don't know if it is just me, but have found stock props to be somewhat different.
