Drive lube change-- Drain/Fill plug is behind the prop. Vent plug on top side. Fill lube from the bottom with a pump until it starts to come out the vent. Then top off the reservoir.

Royal Purple is good stuff. It will take about 7.5 qts with a filter change. Run a 20w-50 or something close.

I think they use the same Merc oil filter as the rest of Merc engines. I run Mobil 1 M1-302 filters.
Not sure about the part # on spark plugs. I know they used to be pretty pricey.

I just did my B1 and it took about 2 1/2 qts. The SAE tests I've seen on gear lube don't bode well for Royal Purple. You really need to go to www.amsoil.com and go to oil comparisons and check out the gear lube test.

At that age, us your coolant needs flushed and changed.

I run Mobil1 15w50 and a Wix 51060R filter on mine.

About 3 quarts of drive lube. Buy an extra.

Plugs are NGK, but I can't remember the part number. Pull one and check.

There are plenty of posts on hereabout the 496, as well as what Poland filter to use. Do a search.

I have been running the Marine gear lube behind a 550HP 522 and the drive is holding up very well. After 2 seasons the comes out looking like I just put it in. But I am running in pretty cold water with a drive shower. I have been beating on the drive pretty good though. I contacted Amsoil tech support and they recommend the severe duty gear lube for high performance applications. The Marine version can handle more water than the severe duty. If your running a stock 496 than the Marine version is the way to go.

I would run this oil:
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx
It has the high Zinc for high performance engines. It also has better dispersant/detergent additives.

Definitely run the EA series filter, the tallest that will fit. I run the EA076 which is about 9" tall. The problem with the R series WIX is that they increase the pore size in the filter element to get more flow, this also allows more dirt in your motor.
