1996 454

Looking for some engine related help, have the chance to pick-up a 1996 454 300 H.P. engine, has a burned valve. about 400 hours, will this work in a 1988 Nova Spyder, I allready have exhaust headers, slient choice exhaustaluminum intake and 850 holley along with edelbrock oval port aluminum heads, I was thinking about going through the lower end and changing the cam,any recomendations on that. The Spyder currently has a blown up engine in it, it has a Bravo drive.

The 300hp engine is going to have a cast crank and pistons, probably peanut port heads and possibly a two bolt main block.

Since you have heads you can add them and get a 454 Mag cam and bring the engine up to about 350hp. It would be good piece of mind to put new rod and main bearings in the lower end.

It would cost a lot of money to go much beyond that

2nd. that
This sounds like it would be a good way to go. Just FYI a 850 is a little big for a 454 cu.in. running at the rpm's you will be running at (45-4700). Usually a 750 works best for a 454 at those rpm's.

I'm pretty sure all the Gen V's came with a 4 bolt main. Not that it matters as Rex is correct....the 330 is not a good platform for making major changes. Generally considered to be good money after bad to to start making any major mods to it. Upside is they tend to run forever if left relatively stock and treated nice. :drink:
