The port side valve cover on my 525 is "bubbling" just a little bit and ready to start chipping. What are my options?
A) Replace with new or used. What do they run? Does anyone even sell just one? B) Re-Finish. I'm assuming they are powdercoated. Who does this sort of work and what should I expect to pay? http://www.cpperformance.com/p-16301...ve-covers.aspx |
I'd have both valve cover stripped and repainted with nothing to do with Mercury. If they want to advertise on my engines, they can pay me...

I have used the Merc blue paint in the past and had great results. The nickerson carbs I had for my blowers on my 500 HPs came natural color. I painted the carbs, and the pulleys on my upgraded sea pumps with the rattle can and they came out great. Make sure to sand blast them clean, tack cloth them, then hit them with an automotive pre paint grime remover. Take your time with the paint, it will run easy. Very light coats in a low humid moderate temp area. The sprayer on the can lays out nice. I ended up with near zero "orange peel" on flat surfaces. |
same here...i have a set on the shelf that started to peel off...have the real paint for 'em,but touch-ups only make them look worse...going to heat them up to remove (and save) the stickers, and have them repainted...still cheaper than buying new ones

the 2 part anodized look paint from plasticoat looks close to the merc blue, spray the silver base, then the blue...the gasket is the same for a late model big block truck/suburban from felpro about $20 pr at auto parts store....merc loves their stuff !!!! or loves to put it to you !

Don't forget resale. Not for nothing, but non merc racing valve covers may chase some buyers away. For the wiser no big deal, but as hard as it is to sell a boat today, I would leave them as they are. BTW, I think they are a sexy valve cover to boot.
EZStriper - Do you have a link for the paints? |
Paint color is GM code 20 1981 Bright Blue Effect

We see the paint bubbling and corroding off of many of the Mercury parts. We usually sand blast the surface, polish or prime/paint. HP blue paint will match up perfectly, unless you want to pay $$$ for a new one from Mercury?
HP Mercury Blue Paint $23.76 can (MCM 92-822825-1). http://teaguecustommarine.com/index....lic-paint.html |
