Yes, I think I paid 75. almost 2 yrs ago. I keep a spare now.

Biggus 10-30-2011 02:55 PM

...you should have a spare if you're running MSD. (May Soon Die) :drink:

Been there too many times with that junk, not a fan.

MILD THUNDER 10-30-2011 08:40 PM

They only rebuild the automotive ones, not the marine ones. Due to the fact the marine ones are filled with epoxy.

The 6AL "N" and 6an are, but not the 6A or 6AL. The "N" is for nascar guys I think. Talked to MSD last week about this, as one of my marine ones took a crap. Says Im SOL. They will rebuild the 6A or 6AL ones he said. :drink:

formula racer 10-31-2011 08:01 PM

I know the older stuff was BRUTAL, I had several
MSD7AL2's that would "sit" over the winter and in the Spring suddenly not work? I had good luck with the 7AL3 for the brief time I had it, then switched to a MSD 10 and it worked awesome, but, wasn't all that great on the "street".

I seem to remember years ago being able to wire a "bypass" in my MSD6A so that I could just run without the box if I was ever stuck, cant remember how I wired it, but, could look it up.

I dont know if the new "Digital" stuff is marine certified? But, its probably much more reliable than there old stuff

Just my .02

Michael

ART go to the "Testing an MSD" or the - trouble shooting section of the MSD web site, good luck !

c_deezy 11-01-2011 02:45 AM

If the MSD stuff is so failure prone, then why do people continue to run it?

BONDO10 11-01-2011 06:36 AM

The one that took a crap on me this summer was a 6M-2 marine box, purchased in 1999. 12-13 years out of it, Im not complaining. I think the main key with these boxes, is mounting them on the transom, or away from the engines, or if you have to mount on the engine, use the rubber feet MSD sells to isolate them from vibrations.

I've had mine go bad several times. Everytime it would go bad is after the battery had been drained. One time I ran the stereo til the battery was very low. The last time we had a power inverter hooked to a battery to run a lap top which Eddie was using to tune the ECM's. I think one of the things that kills them is Alternators trying to recharge a very discharged battery. They always go out the next time you use them after the incident.

f_inscreenname 11-12-2011 09:53 AM

One reason i use the MSD 6T box....it can be fixed. The last one cost 35.00 bucks. Just takes 4 weeks to get back.

No one mentioned the pro comp box. I've had on in my 19' for 4 years now. Not bad for the money.

thanks I got a new one from jim ried right away, thanks though. Artie done for the season well until march, might have to pull the motor to do some work.

brivander 12-01-2011 07:16 PM

Not to sounds like a complete idiot, but why run these boxes, aren't they overkill for most of these engines? I just run the stand alone distributor and cranked out close to 550 horse with it...

f_inscreenname 12-01-2011 10:02 PM

My case I always had issues with the Merc chips with the cams i run so I went to a pro comp dist and box. Picked up 200 rpms and made idle perfect. On the race boat I found 2 MSD 6 T boxes on eBay for less then a 100 each. Just cheaper buying the Merc's.
