power steering bracket
please help i just install an imco power steering pump relocate bracket it puts the power steering pump up away from the exhaust
this is on a 454 everything fit nicely except on the front of the pump there is a mounting bracket that has no where to bolt to the engine do i need this bracket or are the 2 bolts sticking out the back of the pump sufficient Thanks in advance |
A picture would be worth a million words:drink:
I have used these same brackets several times with no problems. The only problem I ever had was paint flaking off. I even have one of these brackets on my current boat. |
can you tell me if the front of your power steering pump has a bracket on it or are you just using the 2 bolts in the back?
|
The boat is in storage, I will check pictures to see if I can see it. I know I used the two bolts in the back. I can't remember, every time I take out the engine I take the bracket off with the PS pump still attached.
It should be pretty straight forward. |
thanks i appreciate the effort

Like Big Jim said a picture would explain a lot, What pump are you using? the saginaw style or the newer mini pumps with a removable reservoir? Why are you moving it?
|
older pump its an 89 7.4 i put on 496 exhaust and the pump line was hitting i know a lot of people bend the line i got a good deal on this bracket and decided to go that route it moves the pump up and more towards the center of the motor the pump had a z shaped bracket that went from the front behind the pulley to the mounting bolt of the old bracket now the bracket is too short because of the relocated pump
|
Can you find a place close to the original hole drill & tap & use a shorter bolt in that hole, the z bracket is supposed to keep the pump from flexing the rear mount & pitching the belt. My .02 cents worth hope it helps. Randy

thanks you are probably right it needs to be there i will have to figure something out
|
As long as the bracket is strong and doesn't seem to flex, you can get away without the Z bracket. Most all aftermarket brackets do not have a provision for the Z bracket.
