Quadrajet carbs have 2 cup plugs that go to the main wells that are pressed in at factory. heat expansion cause these plugs to leak eventually. they will leak when the engine is cold which will drain the fuel bowl after sitting for long periods. some people will epoxy the plugs which is a temporary cure. the best cure is to buy a well plug kit then drill a small hole in the plug and screw a sheet metal screw into plug to remove it. the new plugs are aluminum with a o-ring that can be pressed into original holes then can be carefuly staked to hold in place. this has been a chronic problem with Q-jets for years

Dumb question maybe but I know from experience that you can't be pumping the throttle or holding them open while trying to start these engines. A few pumps are good at first but you must return the throttles to idle so the chokes close before trying to crank the engines. Holding the throttles open, even slightly, opens the choke plates past the point of easy starting, assuming they are properly adjusted in the first place. Proper choke operation and adjustment on these guys is critical.

...and get on the water fast....go here http://www.nationalcarburetors.com/m...rochester.aspx
....and spend $ 200/ea, bolt them on, fire it up and go. Best bang for the buck out there.
If you have the time to fool with it, join Cliff's, order the kit he recommends and rebuild both.
Just depends on how bad and how fast you want this to go away.

What would be a visual indicator of the plugs on the bottom leaking? I pulled my Weber 9780S off because I too was experiencing the long crank before start after sitting for a week and the loading up at cold idle was getting pretty bad.
My port side plug on the bottom seems to have a brown residue and I would suspect that it is leaking.
I also noticed my primaries/secondaries are the same size where as usually the primaries are smaller? Carbs are one thing I don't have a whole lot of experience with...I've always left well enough alone when it comes to them.
