quick easy question????

Its a 1994 mercruiser 502 efi mag.. I was changing the impeller housing and impeller and checked the oil in the water/fuel pump and it is full of fuel... New mech. fuel pump??

i have seen that before,i doubt the pump is bad,the cavity that the driving lobe sits in needs oil in it to lubricate the moving parts, are you sure its gasoline,or is it stinky, dirty oil?

mike tkach 05-04-2012 04:14 PM

if it is for sure gasoline i would replace the pump, usually when a pump diafram developes a leak it will go up the hose, but maybe it just hasen,t gotten that bad yet.

They all do this, you have to change the fluid regularly

It smells like gas for sure.. the boats got some bad history behind it.. theft repossion.. sat hidden for a long time.. just tyin to get it back up to its prime

On both boats I owned (4 pumps), they've always had fuel in them. On the first boat (2) I had I changed the fuel pumps and shortly after I had fuel in the oil. Now I just change the oil every 25 hours. If I see metal on the magnet I rebuild the pump. The lobe and a washer are where it has always come from.

So the pumps ok?? The diaphram doesnt appear to have any holes in it.. just put new oil in it and run it?

That is what I would do. Its pretty normal to see some fuel contamination. Use Merc HP gear lube or whatever you use for drive lube. I used to change mine yearly on my 525SC.
