Alternator died
I had noticed over the last few weeks that my alternator wouldn't charge when starting the boat until I revved the motor up some. Then last time I went out it wouldn't charge at all for about 30 minutes, then it started charging.
I took it out and bench tested it, no charge. Took it apart and cleaned the brushes and checked for opens or shorts on the field and stator windings. Nothing seemed wrong, put it back together and still no charge. Looks like I have to buy a new one. Anyone ever have these rebuilt? Its the gm 1 wire style and everything looks to be in nice shape so I hate to toss it. |
I had one rebuilt several years ago. Mine charged fine but caused a battery drain and ran batteries down.
Anyway been working for several years without a problem. |
Yours may look great but for $70 you get a new 100 amp alternator....

Thanks for the link, yeah I am going to buy a new one, just wondering if it was worth fixing the old one or just throwing away.
I will give a local shop a call and see what it would cost. Thanks |
I met the guys from DB at a car show, they have some very good stuff. I would definitely get one of there products over getting a rebuild, and I have a good cheap rebuilder close by.

the regulator in the back of it is probably going bad. if you checked brushes and got it back together right you were 3 screws from having it out. talk to a local rebuilder. he can get you the 1-wire marine reg or do yours.
