Cam / intake choise 454..
Today i'm running with twin 454 edelbrock performer plus cam 2162, performer mainfold 2161 and 750cfm weber(edelbrock) carb. running 4600rpm at full trottle. I've bought l-29 vortec heads and thinking of canging intake and cam.. What du you think of performer rpm air gap intake and http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL11-236-4/ maybe this cam. Stock exhaust thru hull.. Will this make a differance? My goal is to increase rpm with the same propps and drives to 4800-5000rpm..

Im gonna guess you have the peanut port heads now?
If you install the vortec heads, you will gain probably a full point of compression. This is a good thing. I would ditch the stock exhaust, in favor of some performance manifolds. Being that you have the stock cast bottom end, I'd leave the cam you have in it. Going to more duration, can make more power, but your gonna need to spin the engine faster. That cam you showed, will probably make peak power around 5400 give or take. I wouldnt want to spin the cast stock internals much over 5000. So, I say do the vortec heads, do the exhaust, get a intake that is port matched to the vortec heads, and go boating. You should see a nice jump in power. |
Ok. Thank's.
Then i'll try that first. Do you think edelbr. performer rpm Air gap vill be a good choise of intake? Or should i go for a single plane like: http://www.cpperformance.com/p-13550...val-ports.aspx I want more power between 4-5000rpm Can i use stock rocker arms? with the same springs as i used on the peanuit heads? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-5862 |
I would go with a single plane intake, more plenum volume which in a bilge is needed. Hot engine compartment air is a lot less dense and requires more cubic ft of air to equal the same amount of oxygen in a cool environment. I did a lot of searching on this topic and that is what I found based on a merc 420 and 500 hp using an 800 cfm carb and large single plane

I would save the money on the manifold upgrades & consider upgrading to hydraulic roller cam vs flat tappet. I didn't see any improvement switching from the performer to air gap manifold.

The L-29 heads aren't a performance head. To get much out of them you will need to send them to a knowledgeable porter. Your peanuts can probably be ported to flow just as well for the same porting dollars. Besides, the L-29 heads will still require an adjustable stud kit if you put in an aftermarket cam.
Comparing your oval port Performer intake to an oval port AirGap Performer RPM intake - not worth the dollars to swap. If you have the budget, get some better heads. mc |

Roller cam was'nt in my budget. I've changed the heads and intake t performer rpm air gap. Tinking o buying ths cam.http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...make/chevrolet Will i work with stock exhaust?
Read ths article: http://www.speedwake.com/photopost/data/500/454_3.jpg |
the RPM and air gap have virtually the same performance numbers. if your manifolds were a few years old and run in salt replacing them wasn't a bad idea. otherwise you shoulda saved the money. that cam with a 110 lobe sep angle won't work with stock exhausts. the minimum you could run is the Gils that article was pushing. those vortec heads are ok at the rpm range you will be running. porting does little to improve them beyond a little bowl work, gasket matching the intake and ckeaning up some of the roughness on the ski jump in the intake ports. i would try that combo with the existing cams and see what you get. i think you will be happy with the results. i think you actually lost some HP using performer intakes on peanut heads. the ledge where the oval intake runner hits the round head runner causes a lot of turbulence in the airflow. don't know where you are. is this gonna be in water anytime soon or are you icebound like all of us northerners? let us know how it came out.

Had reversion w bob m- just saying had to extend inner pipes 6 inches bc water in oil-

Live in sweden and yes no boating untill june...
Will probably stay with the cam i have... Dont have the budget for headers, valvtrain etc.... Hope the heads and intake air gap (the old intake, performer was round runners) will help me go a Little bit faster.. 67,4mph gps at wot now. Will update when i tried with new setup. :) |
ii didn't know there was a performer peanut intake. you can re-sell those. flat or dished pistons? cuz you picked up a full point of compression over the 118 cc chamber heads that came off. they say that is good for about 4% increase alone. i am doing a little clean-up work in the ports and chambers of a set of L29's i picked up. if you do any work to those heads, do not go bigger valves. those chambers will have to be carved away till you are nearly back to the orig chamber volume for a 2.19 valve to breathe worth anything.

2161 is peanut port, edelbrock obscures this in their discription as "truck application"
i just sold mine last week |
Do you have a gen 6 roller block? I would use the 454 HO cam .510/.540 lift and stock valve train works fine.... That cam is cheap and was rated at 415HP in a 502 I believe...... I also used the vortec heads and did put the larger valves in with limited success......... The dual plane intake is the right choice for you and I don't see much gain in power by spinning the motors more than 5,000rpm if that. The 496 style exhaust is much better than the log style so I would go with that as you can probably find a decent set pretty reasonable........ My wellcraft 2600 Martinique saw a speed increase of 4 mph from 47 to 51 after a complete rebuild of a L29 310HP motor..... I usually cruise at 30-35MPH so I would say the extra work done was a waste of time! It has great torque and really cruises effortlessly. I never cruise at full throttle as I have the Donzi for go fast duty! I decided to make the upgrades as I was rebuilding the whole motor and needed to get new heads anyway......... If I was to do it again I would get a set of the Dart iron eagles and go from there........ A heavy cruiser that needs torque will excel with Vortec heads. My Donzi has ported aluminum rect port heads and it's also a 509 and the power increase it has over the vortec heads is rediculous...... TBF

My buddy (sonic600) used Bullet cams. They performed exactly as ordered.
Mark been in the game for a long time great guy to deal with. (662)893-5670. Good luck on your build |
+1 for Bullet cams. Tell them what you are doing & they will hook you up. They know what they are doing.

I've bought a pair of 454 magnum cam in 224 ex 224 lift 528, 528 lobe sep 115,5.
Hope this will work fine. Will keep you updated. The old cam was worn out.... |
First try i got 68,4mph on gps.... Now i'll try new carb setup. Starting with the same setup as 454 magnum... Would like to buy new exhaust. Lightning headers, gil, imco...
Is Headers the best chiose? Reduced waterflow? |
The gil-mercruiser setup from 496 (8.1) engines is a very good setup, durable, and cheap-easy to find used. I have heard they will handle up to 600 hp with no turbolators.
|
Where can i find that? I'n sweden they are very hard to find used.... Ebay?

Ebay, or swap shop here.
