Scarab 22 engine hatch shocks

Can anyone recommend the best replacement engine hatch shocks for 1996 Scarab 22?

I just replaced mine with (2) 50 pound gas shocks that hold up the hatch perfectly. Any parts store should carry them.

I had a '98 Scarab 22 and my lift supports were like 90#. I tried smaller ones but it would not hold.

What I did was I placed a bath scale in the engine compartment then put a 2x4 on top of it pointing up to the hatch. I allowed the hatch to press down on the scale to get the force. Close enough and it worked great.

I got the stainless steel variety and they looked pretty, too.
