Penetrating Oils

Especially for you salt water people...

Penetrating Oils

Machinist’s Workshop Mag™ recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment.

*Penetrating oil .......... Average load*
None ........................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ............... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix...............53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a “home brew” mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the “home brew” was better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.

Note also that “Liquid Wrench” is almost as good as “Kroil” for about 20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is the best and you can also use ATF- lacquer thinner 50 - 50 mix.

i thaught the p b blaster would have been better.

dereknkathy 09-29-2012 09:47 AM

i thought PB was best also. though i use carb cleaner for really stuck stuff. kinda like the acetone mix. the really thin solvent can get into smaller places.

I was surprised too, I farm and use PB by the gallon.

Kroil has given me the best all-around results.

Yes, ATF/solvent is arguably the best on steel bolts/steel hole situations, but Aluminum corrosion is a different story. Kroil is far better than anything I've tried on that combo.

i know pb blaster smells the worst:lolhit:

I'd be interested in a test of a stainless bolt in raw aluminum after lengthy exposure to salt water. That's one of the worst galvanic corrosion scenarios. I've faced it several times, and never really had great success, although I didn't try the ATF/acetone combination.

Would have been curious to see the CRC "freeze off" in that mix.

Me too...lol

I've been researching valve issues on a Ford flathead/hotrod my Dad gave me..the old timers at one of the Ford forums use the acetone mix to free the guides from the block..never heard of it before.
One of the carb experts is 101 yrs old and gave me some advice via email on the Stromberg 97.
If he had a boat hobby I guess he would be broke by now :lolhit:

we use the pb blaster at work with good results,we are trying the kroil and so far its working a little better than the pb blaster.

RAPTOR1 10-03-2012 06:40 PM

Anyone used Zep 45?, it's by far the least economical but we keep going back to it in our shop. ATF and acetone are always on the shelf, can't wait to try it!

never heard of the acetone mix? Will try it. We use wurth rost off with great results.

Cobra100+ 10-06-2012 07:52 PM

The BEST wasnt tested......Meyth Salicate (sp) wintergreen oil. kinda expesive, smells very good, but works excellant. Try it.

MILD THUNDER 10-06-2012 10:48 PM

Ive used the acetone/atf mix, and it does work!

f_inscreenname 10-07-2012 06:58 PM

Unlike some others I can wait to try it but when needed I will have to give the ATF/acetone mix a try.

I have heard of that as well...isn't that also one of the compounds in marvel mystery oil?

Quazz209 10-09-2012 08:34 AM

We use the Zep 45 and the previously the original ZEP as well in my shop. Havent used the ATF/Acetone but the Zep blows away the other commercially available options.

Cobra100+ 10-09-2012 09:43 AM

not sure about wintergreen being in Marvel. We use the Wintergreen oil on Racing slicks as well for extra bite.

Wally 10-09-2012 10:31 AM

No its not...i just searched the MSDS on the Marvel...its basicly a mineral spirit mix....i do remember someone useing the wintergreen oil in something....or was it peppermint oil?......i forget
