Cam suggestions

Im building from scratch a Gen6 454 Mag. 10:1 JE pistons, Scat crank and rods, +.030", 088 stock heads, 1.7:1 crane gold pro roller rockers, EMI thunder, factory MAG EFI intake.

Im now looking for suggestions on cam shafts and lifters.

Here's what I want:
  • Nice idle, but a lil bump would be fine
  • Awesome grunt from 1500-5000 rpm

Dont want to buy springs if I dont have to.

What brand and model of each would you recommend and why ?

I recommend talking to Bob Madera, he is the master when it comes to cams.

I'm in the middle of my build which is similar but 502 based. I think your 10:1 is going to be to high for the 088's. Only going off what I've researched and been told by bob. I'm working with him as well on cam and valve train for my 509.

Whatever you do,Buy the matching valve springs for whatever cam you decide to go with. They really are not that expensive in the big picture. If you reuse your old "high milage" springs with a new performance cam you stand the chance of a failure. It would really suck to smack a valve against a piston at 5000 rpm. IMO your valve train is one place you dont want to cheap out. You could destroy your whole engine if you dropped a valve. Just my 0.02. Cheers. Also check your retainers and locks if reuseing.

P.S. Hopefully the weather co-operates for you to make it to Vic from the San Jauns.

I picked up a cam from an OSO member here. It's a EFI HP500 cam (.600" 232/242). The stock 502 cam is .5814" (difference of .0186"). Will the stock valve springs handle this increase or should I be looking for something stiffer (maybe these ??? http://www.cpperformance.com/p-11722...e-springs.aspx)

On my road race cars of days gone by, we would machine down the valve spring seats and install torrington bearings. Is this still something people do ? It was also a way to run stiffer springs with less initial pressure = less wear on valve train.

You would be better off just to get a new set of the correct springs for that cam at this point instead of reusing an old set.

the old set is on a pair of 088 heads with like 26 hours on them. previous owner upgarded to aluminum at the end of the first summer. Still think I should replace ?

Im not against it, but the $150 could be spent else where
