tach question baja islander

Hello I'm new here I have a late eighties Baja 180 with mercruiser 3.0. My tach has never worked can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I need to start troubleshooting... thank u

Look on the back of the tach and make sure the selector is on the right position. It's a 4 position switch with #'s 1,2,3 & 4. I think your 4 cylinder might need #2 cause my 8 cyl uses #4.
Verify that the ground terminal has a connection to GND.
The tach signal is in the gray wire from the coil negative post that leads directly to the tach sender terminal. It's position #2 in your master plug, that's directly below the large contact on the left as you look at the female side of the plug. Without that connected the motor won't run so if you move it take note of where it was so you can put it back if need be. Even without a tach indication the tach may be providing electrical signal to run the motor.
