lousiana. salt or fresh water use. if salt, punch out the guides and check head where they go in. i still don't get why people run raw water cooling in these motors.

The guy I bought the boat from ran it mostly in brakish water. I have no idea where it was run before that.

I might be able to recommend a machine shop.

I live in Bogalusa and work in New Orleans. I either travel through Slidell or Covington on my way in. I will be needing a good machine shop and thats just something I always have a hard time finding.

I would be happy to post my dyno sheets. Another +1 for Bob Madera @ marine kinetics. Randy

Another question for you guys. I found what appears to be a running 330 for the right price, the guy didnt really seem to know what he has. My question is can I put my rectangle port heads and a upgraded cam on the 330 to achieve about the same HP as my 454 Mag ? I would like to get a motor in the boat before winter hits and build my Mag motor during the colder months and swap it out whenever I get ready. Thanks.

Welcome to the site.. I'm in Slidell and also work in NO..

I don't believe the Lx (330)has forged internals.. ?both Mags do

Good luck, plenty of guys on here that know a little about this..

people put B&M 250 blowers on 330's and they hold up. depends on which gen is which. most heads will run on most blocks but sometimes takes some playing with head gaskets. also if Mag is roller motor and 330 is flat tappet, would hafta convert block to take lifter retainer. but it is all doable. don't run the jumped-up 330 at 6 grand though...

Thanks man. I'm just assuming that the engine for sale is a 330. I found it on craigslist for sale in Mandeville. The guy didn't seem to know much other than his mechanic was pulling it out and that he could run it on the ground once it was out. I was hoping to go look at it this afternoon but, I have something to take of when I get home. Hopefully tomorrow I can go check it out.

My current Mag has a flat tappet cam in it. I'm basically wanting to at least get the boat in the water before it gets too cold and a running engine would be a good way to go. Especially for the right price. My biggest concern is that a 330 hp motor will not be near enough engine to push my boat worth a dang. Best I can figure is that the boat full of fuel will weigh 5200 lbs. I know it will never be a "fast" boat and I'm ok with that but, I do want to be able to get some reasonable speed out of it. My Mag motor spun two rod bearings, shattered one top piston ring and had another top ring that was stuck, so it needs a lot of attention. I have all intentions of building it up fairly stout. Nothing crazy, just stout.

330 hp in a 5200lb boat will be not be fast, to put it mildly. It seems to me that it would simply make more sense to rebuild what you have with a few upgraded parts. The heads you have are solid parts, and with the correct compression and cam, you will do much better than the old 330 would. I think the limiting factor will be the exhaust, so having a cam properly spected will really be the key.

you can make 500-520 hp with what you have pretty easily, its more about the cam then anything, and the boats exhaust, use rectangle port heads (mag) nice intake and 800 holley with 454 shortblock of choice, easy 480-520 hp...
