Formula rub rail replacement
 

I'm getting ready to replace the rub rail on my 272 SR1 and have a few questions. First off I have not decided exactly what style I want to go with, white with a stainless overlay or just keep the original black. Opinions please. Second when I remove the old what should I use to fill the old screw holes I've herd a few different things from silicon to a resin filler. yes i have some pointers for you,,taco marine sucks!! i had their whive vinyl rub rail on my formuls and it turned yellow..after a year,,i phoned them and they said take it off and throw it away and we will send you replacement rub rail..well after about a week i got 1 box with a 20' or so length in it,,i thought this is not going to do a 33' boat and i needed at least 72 feet of it..i called them back and asked where are the other 3 box's of rubrail..she said ill get back to you..waited another 2 weeks and they did not get back to me,,so i called them back and they put me on hold for 20 minutes then finally she came back on and said the rub rail i has has been discontinued..then i asked for a different number and she said fine and was supposed to send me 4 box's of another style rub rail..long story short i never got my warranty rub rail nor did i ever get a phone call back..i waited another 2 weeks and waited on hold for 30 minutes and hung up..waited another 2 weeks and asked for the person i was dealing with and they no longer worked their..gave them my claim number and he said that claim number has been justified..i was like what does that mean,,he said you got your roll of rub rail and i said yeah enough to do a dingy..so basicly taco sucks! if you want a good company to deal with and you want to get FULL length rub rail call ..

installing it..make sure its hot out,,put the rub rail in the sun,,the sun makes it more plyable..then i take a rope and wrap it around one end of the rub rail and male a loop in the rope..your going to need a few friends to help you put the rub rail in place and hpld it their..start from the tip of the boat and install your screws..then with friends or you can use masking taop to hold up the sides bring the rubrail all the way to the back of the boat..now with the end with the rope on it get a ratch strap and put one end through the loop in the rope,,no take another piece of rope and wrap it around the other end of the rub rail with another loop..put the ratch strap end on that side and slowly thghten it up to take all the slack out of the new rub rail..aleigh the sides of the rubrail and look at it from a distance and realign it ubtio its straight..now give the ratchet strap another clock and start installing the SS screws...look at how tight you make the screws because if you tighten it to much to\he rub rail wil look rippled...BTW you will also need to use a sealer on the screws and you need to seal up the old holes...i also drill a 1/4'' hole every 2' on the under side of the rub rail so water wont get trapped behind it..

Thanks for the advise FIXX. on your formula did you use the rigid vinyl with the s/s over lay or just rigid vinyl? Im going to a local boat shop tomorrow they have tons of samples of both taco and barbour.

i bought the rigid vinyl then took the taco crap off and pitched it..for the extra 1-- bucks im going with the SS insert which is delivered by truck..

they make epoxy in squirt tubes that is great for shooting into screw holes and small voids. BUT, if you want to ever remove top cap from hull, this will make it very difficult. on the other hand, very few people ever take top off boat. spreading the gap and squirting epoxy all around seam will (sort of) bond top to hull sides, making the boat stiffer. but it will be messy. mask and vaseline area below where the epoxy is gonna drip.

My grandson and I did ours, hot sun, drills, masking tape and 5200 to bed everything. He held the caulking gun while sitting on the boat, I worked my way around with the heat gun adjusting, drilling, gooping ( technical speak) the screws and putting them in. 3 hours and complete.:daz:

Looks good !!! I took all of the old off today and tightened the hull/deck bolts now I need to decide what I am going to do for the new. I like the white with stainless overlay but I need to get some samples. The only problem I have is that the stuff I took off was almost 2" wide so that really narrows the selection with being able to cover the discoloration from the old.

I replaced the aluminum rub rail on mine and replaced it with Barbour Plastics using the white semi-rigid rub rail and white vinyl insert. I actually used what Barbour says is for a Sunsation. Two pieces of rub rail and one piece of insert on my 31 foot Scarab. I filled all the old holes with 5200 and put some on each screw before I installed the new rail. Be patient and take your time - very happy with how mine came out.

I just ordered the white rigid from Barbour. Am going to try to install within the next week ill post pics!
