if its a cast internal stroke it to 489/496, if its a gen 4or 5 loose the heads, if its a gen 6 the heads can do more than you might think and if its a mag boost it
I'm not a big motor guy that's why I ask. It has 420hp that is supposedly "stroked to a 496 with big port heads" as the sellers mechanic told me. I know the boat as is should run low 60's but I want to get as much out of it as I can with not going to blowers or EFI motors. I know I can pick up a few MPH with bravo's and about 1-2 mph with sanding the last 6-8' with 180 grit but I didn't know like maybe swapping the intake or carb set up would do anything big and if so like what intake and carb. Etc
Motors are from an 89 cig

You need to know what internals you have in them before you formulate a plan to increase hp. If you're not tready to spend 3k an engine minimum then its a waste of $$$ |
He picked up the 89 Cafe Racer with a 420/TRS package in it. There are posts on it in the Cig section

man, dont yall have jobs or something? you really have too much time on your hands...
and Griff, what about upgrading a carb/intake set up? or what drive/ratio/props could i expect to pick up a few MPH from? |

Make sure you throw all the trash, corn cobs, aluminum cans, and other items out of the boat. That ought to ensure you pick up a few MPH.

you wont find much performance gains from drives or props without adding hp first. these are areas that are typically tuned to a specific engine. most bigger heavy V's run 1:50 drive ratios and thats most likely what you have. props, you have to play with but B1's are a good place to start unless you have an old school deeper X dim.
should have been fine but I just cleared a few out anyway.
Mechanic looked at it and said it had 454 stroked to 496's lol he must be able to see inside.....

and Griff, what about upgrading a carb/intake set up? or what drive/ratio/props could i expect to pick up a few MPH from? It will take 15-20hp per engine increases to see a 1mph gain Test the boat in the Spring and get accurate gps speeds and rpms and then talk to BBlades about having the props labbed. You have to have good baselines before you start changing stuff. |
If I'm not mistaken ,the old 420 mercs had just regular cast iron crap for exhaust. Good exhaust and a cam swap will wake up a 420. Preferably hydraulic roller with true headers
35 Cig TRS with 420's will run 60-62 if engines run good....
420's had Gil exhaust.
The 420's i have seen had giant iron castings that flowed better but weighed a ton, this boat appears to have Stainless Marine castings.
All great info. Thanks guys. I really want to do arnesons on this cause I haven't seen a cafe with surface drives before. Might be doing big motors in it but we'll see. I will be happy if I can get the boat to 65
You want to put arneson's on a 60mph boat?
