Mag 496 rear main seal tool?
I about to put my new seal in and it is a press fit. Does anybody know of an installer
To use or is there a secrete..I've done several seals on other engines but never these 8.1 And they are a press fit. |
You might be able to put it in with a mallet if it is even and bottoms out correctly against the other piece.
There is a tool - it looks like a big circular cup. Why do you need one.... If you have an oil leak, make sure ALL THE OIL PAN bolts are tight before you assume its the seal. 496's are notorious for the the oil pan bolts coming loose. |
2 fresh rebuilds so I have new seals and I don't want them to leak. They are very tight and I don't want to egg shape or damage the seal by not evenly installing
Anybody have the part number on the circular cup shaped tool that fits |
Ahhh... OK. Dont have the PN
Somebody here should chime in. I think... The dseal frames bottom out on each other providing a consistent wear pattern. Borrow one! |
Anybody have one to loan or rent out.
|
I've put more rear main seals in than a little. Put a dab of grease on the rubber part and knock it in with a block of wood and a hammer.
|
These 8.1's are different than the MKIV GenV or GenVI. They are not snug they are press fit on. I'm afraid
a block of wood or something might warp or twist it. |
I guess I can lathe a cup to fit just over the crank and deep enough place seal depth and then knock it on

Your idea is the best. |
The tool I use is a nylon driver that is used for installing the Speedy Sleeve, the same size as a Gen 5 or 6 BBC. If you don not drive it on properly; you will have a issue. Make one O.D. 4.750 / I.D. 4.625, 1.000 depth.
