3m 4200 Swiss cheese
I resealed the outer drives on our express cruiser. The starboard drive was still dripping a bit? (the gaskets have long went away) I used 3M 5200 let it cure for 5 hrs and put the boat back in water checked, no leaks, idled over to the slip and drip, drip, drip. Back out the next day. removed the 5200 and it looked like swiss cheese inside? Pulled off the 5200 and let it sit over night sat and resealed with 4200 fast cure Sun morning and am going to try again today.

What are you guys using to seal up the housing Do you mean where the outdrive transom assemblies mount to the outside of the transom? |

5200 needs minimum of 24 hours before you mess with it. A few hours doesn't do much of anything other than let it skin over. Also, 5200 is a BEAR to break loose or remove when you need to. 4200 is available in a fast cure and will seal darn well. But yes, if your transom is not solid, nothing is going to seal it.

Problem solved. Used 4200 fast cure (caulk tube). Dry as a bone. Pulling the engine/taking transom housing out was not in the program this year. I agree the bottom of the transom has to be a bit soft but every 2 years I pull out the 4200 and replace it and for a 1988 the boat has always been dry (since we have owned it). The original owner and his boat mechanic (a little less then par I guess) never paid any mind or cared about water in the bilge all the time. We've had it now for about 15 years and has been dry the entire time. I called 3M, talked to the tech and all 3M adhesives in the small tube are dated using a bar code. 4200 has a 1 year shelf life and the caulk tube is 2 years. I had NO idea there was a shelf life for this stuff. He feels the tubes were old and there fore I had issues. They wanted to send a rep out to inspect. I told them the problem was solved but that I saved the failed 4200. I did let it cure this time a full 24hrs before putting it back in this time and used a fresh tube.
