Can`t get the carbs to sync.
Fist of I hate carbs , why I have to deal with 1970 technology in 2014 and why I broke my own rules on no carbs no blower motors I`ll never know but it is what it is and another weekend goes by while I`m stuck in the bilge.. (can ya tell I`m frustrated??):angry-smiley-038:
One set of carbs works great, the port set of carbs I can set to idle correctly but then it is about 400rpm lower than starboard at speed. Or I can sync them both to run identical rpm at speed but them the port idles at 2000rpms. Ive tried every adjustment on those stupid things to no avail. Any ideas? |
The idle circuits are completely separate. Nothing you adjust on the idle should affect your cruise or WOT rpms.
|
need more info,,,4 corner idle circuit? how many throttle blade idle screws?
|
dan, check the linkage, you might be in a bind.
|
^ what mike said. When throttle is all the way back make sure carb is all the way closed.
|
Thats the problem , its all linkage, Adjust the linkage to close the blades and it opens later than the other one.. Adjust the linkage to open at the same time and it won`t close all the way at idle.
I had the wife working the throttles, my daughter looking at the other carb and myself adjusting the port side.. hour later still the same. Maybe I need to play with the throttles. |
EFI wouldn't fix Throttles that don't open the throttle linkage the same.
Just helping carbs from getting a bad rap. LOL. ================================== Make sure cables are connected on same position hole on both throttle levers. Some throttles have multiple attachment holes. Make sure throttle levers are the same. DOH. Remove throttle cables from carb linkages. Set idle speed using carburetor itself. In idle position Rehook cables so they don't pull on carb linkage. You want cables adjusted so they are just a c-hair from opening throttles. Yes, C-Hair is measurement. LOL. Obviously, make sure linkage on one motors carbs and engine the same as the other. On and on. You know the drill. BTW: Synching with throttle bodies can only really be done 100% with drive by wire. |
if you were able to get it right on one engine you can get it right on the other,if you want i can help you with in on monday, after my hangover goes away.

It sounds like you are maxed on the amount of throw for the throttle levers. Your throttle levers should have a multile spots for connecting the throttle cable.
Changing the mounting hole will change the amount of throw. |
also keep in mind that the more turns a cable makes the shorter the travel it will have. if one cable is routed in a strange way it will change the throw at the carb.
|
I agree, I think one of your throttle cables is in a different spot. One must be in a different slot changing the ratio of that throttle.
|
I have a vacuum gauge that I use for dialing throttle on carbs, and it is a flawless metering tool....
Yours to borrow if needed |
I am no expert and never had to tackle this sort of issue but if I your problem in front of me I would use a ruler and start with one lever and measure the throw in maybe 1" increments. Set the throttle at 1" then measure what you have at the carb. Then 2" and go down the line and record what you got. Move on to the next throttle lever and compare the measurements that would tell me if the lever/ cable geometry is in the same and go from there. I would think it would be pretty easy using this method to sync the motors especially if you had to people and the person on the carb end payed attention to the carbs closely... When secondaries start to open ect. Ect. Maybe I'm way off base but that's what I would do.
|
If you wanted to get really technical about it you could use dial indicators...

Can't offer anything more than has already been mentioned. Having my own issues with throttle travel and getting it back down to an idle below 1K RPM's with mine. Couldn't imagine the double-migraine of dealing with twins on blower motors. Good luck! |
I had to start all over....so many points of adjustment on the set up I have... because of the spring oilers I had to shim everything up and and that screwed me all up. Both motors idle fine now and both carbs seems to opening at the same rate and equally. We shall see what happens on the water.
Thanx for all the ideas :thankyouthankyou: |
