Engine Building books

I am very much a novice when it comes to engines, and the amount of knowledge some of you guys have never ceases to amaze me. I would really like to pick up some books on the subject of engines and engine building. I did a quick google search, and there are so many out there I have no idea where to start, so if you anyone can point me in the right direction with books/videos you have used I would greatly appreciate it.

Couple good books I have.

Thanks Joe. I had my eye on those two but wanted to check if anyone had any recommendations.

I got one of the e-books and downloaded to my IPad.... It was really nice to have it as a reference when building the engine at the airport..... I am a mopar guy and built many a big/small block in my day and the BBC does have its quirks! The book I got was by Mike Mavrigan?? I have a 454 and a 502 under my belt now so I am getting familiar with the BBC....... Just take your time and ask lots of questions if you get stumped..... TBF

I'd be interested in finding a book that is geared towards building high perf BBC marine engs.

I'm sure there are some significant differences between street/strip engs and high perf marine.engs.

Dennis Moore"s Big Block Chevy Marine Performance, would be my first choice as an intro for marine engines. Explains alot of the basics of a marine engine.

any good engine building book will do. BUT, you use compression ratios, cam profiles, domes, chambers, rods, cranks, etc as specified HERE! any book that is published is old. you can build a great late 60s 454 with 80s updates by using dennis moore's book...

Thanks guys. I just found the book by Dennis Moore on amazon, they really must think highly of it at this price:

A merc service manual is a good reference also.

I wanted to purchase "Small-Block Chevy Marine Performance" by Dennis Moore... $545.77 for a new paperback? And about $300 for a used one? I know they are filled with great info but damn...

MILD THUNDER 08-07-2014 04:59 PM

Most of the basics apply from assembling, what makes power, design, etc, for the big block chevy automotive, to marine use. Marine is mainly things like cam selection, clearances, valve material, valve seat cuts, and so on. But you still need to learn the basic fundamentals of the big block chevy.

14:1 compression, SS exhaust valves, massive overlap and CMI's is you need to know. Have at it!

Granted i bought my book several years ago, but I bought mine directly from Dennis and it seemed like it was less than $50 at the time.

Completely retarded..... just spend a few days reading up on the hundreds of posts here on OSO and you will have most of the info you need. cams, compression, reversion, exhaust are the big variables when it comes to marine engines. All the rest of the stuff is pretty much generic to Big Block Chevy's so any decent high performance rebuild book should get you going..... save the $500 for the gas you will need after you build your awesome motor! It's expensive because it's no longer in print... Dennis Moore is a very knowledgable guy and many of the things he recommends in his book still holds true in 2014. Let's not pretend any BBC marine or otherwise has changed so drastically that some of these older books can't give a guy a great grasp of what's involved. Yes cam/valvetrain choice, compression, piston and ring choice, larger clearances and such are par for the course in a marine application, however how is it that we think it came from anyone on OSO? Don't get me wrong, there is some great knowledge circulating here, however there are many great resources outside of OSO as well including Dennis Moore and countess other guys who have penned performance books specifically for the BBC. Good luck!

Thanks for all the input. Although this is not a book it is really good article on cams that may helps others who want a refresher on the subject.

Here's one I just finished reading, not much about engines but it has some pertinent info on rigging.

It's not marine related but engine building none the less. This is a 7 part series on youtube. Pete the guy who does the video seems very knowledgeable and goes into great detail on some of the subjects especially the one about intakes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQFlaDhWsck I would love to see Eddie Young, Alex Haxby, Bob Madera, or any other marine builder out together something like this.

DjMikeyC 10-14-2014 10:19 AM

I have spent alot of time reading info on and off this site about engine building for marine use and I just came across this book and ordered it...

How to Build Big-Inch Chevy Small Blocks by Graham Hansen

http://www.amazon.com/Build-Big-Inch...=9781934709665

I know its not marine based but may give me some nice info, it has great reviews on amazon, and for about $20 its not a risk if I already know everything in it.

He definitely goes into great detail and is a very well educated person. In one of the videos I believe he mentions having a phd in mechanical engineering, so he a very smart individual. I also like the fact that he gives out his phone number to answer any questions anyone may have, and responds to the comments at the bottom of the page.
