Rust In Engine?
 

There is a story behind this but I'm too lazy to type it all out so I'll just pose a question. If you found all this rust in the intake and riser when checking out a '93 carbed 454 that had been sitting since 2007 what would you do?

A) Pull the motor, pop the freeze plugs out and flush it?
B) Just hook it up to the water hose as normal and just let it push all the rust out? Or
C) Something in between, ie pull as much of the system apart as you can, get as much of the rust out as you can and maybe back flush?

Both of My intakes that were rotted through where the heads meet the intake looked a million times better than that. I think I'd pull the intake and have a loot around...

I'd take it down to a short block and see how bad it really is inside.
Chances are its all bad inside and may be a chunk of scrap.

install it on the front as a anchor...pretty much trash

Looks like junk to me. I wouldn't even bother with it unless it was for shear curiosity.

Don't scrap it,I think there's somebody on here that will sell it as new rebuild.:lolhit:

I was hoping to save it. It's a shame because even though it's been sitting for years everything else looks like it was taken care of. We knew we had to get rid of all the old fuel but engine oil looked like it was just changed, outdrive oil was perfect with no metal on drain plug, spark plugs looked decent, spun over with no problem. The boat is nothing special just a old 240 Sea Ray but it was kept covered and under a carport for all these years. A friend inherited it and was hoping to save it.

I was asked by my friend to help him check it out. On the other hand another friend of his who is suppose to be a boat mech by trade volunteered to also look over it. When I found the rust my first thought was to pull the intake to see how far down the rust went but then decided maybe we should pull it out and do basically option "A" from original post.

A few days went by without doing anything to it when I get a call from my friend (the owner) and says the so called mechanic friend of his went by and saw the rust and said he's seen much worse then that and just put water to it and all that rust will just be pushed through the system. So that's what they did, bad fuel, rust and all! Of course the carb didn't pump fuel so it wouldn't stay running without pouring new fuel in the carb.

I can't believe a so called boat mech. would do this! Maybe that's why I don't trust anyone to touch my boat but me unless it's way over my head and knowledge.

Ya what I should have said was "Does this look rebuilt". :picard1:

did a friends 525SC's a couple of years ago...did not look nearly that bad, still had to replace 1 block and all 4 heads...its scrap...
