Upside down oil filter has to be the dumbest design ever. I crack the filter loose when I'm draining the oil, then lots of rags underneath the oil filter mount and you have to be quick when you pull it off and flip it over. I've never put a hole in the filter and usually the mess isn't too bad if you have the rags where they need to me. I shake my head every time I do it at why they designed it that way.
I tried knocking a hole in thinking it would drain out...it just let it free flow once I separated it from the mount and flipping it over to stop the flow...not so good with the hole in it Do what he said...wrap a bunch of towels to keep it from getting in bilge and get it off, flipped into something to capture drips and get it out of the boat to avoid getting on upholstery |
All else fails, got the manual out. It says as others here have said, twist off the filter just enough to break the seal and allow filter to drain back into pan. Says about 15min or so. Will give it 30min. Then follow the other instructions with enveloping the filter, rags, etc.
Now I just have to find the cheapest price on Merc/Quicksilver oil and MercRacing HiPerf oil filter.... Thanks! |
Put a WIX racing filter on it

I take a small punch and punch a half dozen holes around the top to break the vacuum and that filter drains down in about 10 minutes.
