You may also see your idle speed reduce itself when you turn the mixture screws out. If you simply bolted the carb back on and didn't make any idle speed adjustments and it's idling at 1K rpm, it's more than likely very lean. If it wasn't lean and the idle was high, it most likely wouldn't stall in gear.

Check the bottom of the carb to make sure that all of the vacuum plugs/boots are in place. If any are cracked replace them. A high idle is also indicative of a vacuum leak.

If that looks good, take the idle screws and screw each one in all the way, one at a time and note how many turns it took to bottom out the screws. Don't over tighten them as you'll screw up the seats.

The amount of turns should be between 3/4 to 1 1/2 turns for proper adjustment. As you get closer to 2 turns they become ineffective and there's some other problem like needing the idle circuit driller larger but I dont' think that's what you'll find.
