Brownton mn (central) p.o said had rod knock so got everything to build short block

For what it's worth, I never pulled the TRS drives off when I pulled my engines. Had enough room ahead of them to slide the engine & trans off of the drive shafts, and left the mounts on the engines. I then marked the mounts as to which engine, and which side of engine they were on before sending blocks for any machine shop work. Block were marked as port /starboard as well. Tried to make it as easy on myself as possible. Installation is trickier when the drive is still mounted, as you'll have to have a helper try to rotate the drive (via prop) when you're sliding the trans back on to the drive shaft.... then there's the fun of installing the spring washer fibre washer combo, which will require that the front of the engine is slightly more elevated... easy if you have about 6 arms... I never experienced any alignment issues using this method, but it really isn't the recommended method either.

everybody thinks you have to realign mounts since you took off drive or removed engine. you have to realign cuz it is a boat. it is made of wood and fiberglass and you put 300 to 600 ft/lbs of torque on the transom on and off for years. just cuz you never took out your engine or drive doesn't mean it is still aligned. just cuz you did remove something doesn't mean it is no longer aligned.

My favorite place to break them apart is the bell housing to trans. Separate them there and let the trannies hang. Have done it this way numerous times with no issues. You only have to move the engine about an inch and a half forward to get it to clear.:)

I've read in other posts u risk damaging something in the trans if you separated the engine n left trans hanging

Never had a problem. Have done it at least 10 times this way. The trans is still supported by the trans mounts. Just lucky I guess.

I take it you must have the b/w trans? As they have an extra mount on the tranny that would support it?

Ya unfortunately mines the merc (the p.o did swear up and down that it was the b/w trans. That the shop that built the tranny 4 years ago told him it was b/w) but best I can tell its to short to be the b/w, and it don't apperar to have the removable Bell housing.
