DIY Portable O2 Sensor setup (How to)

Comes in handy for tuning about any boat as long as the exhaust exits transom. Can be used on many other things as well obviously...
Materials: Innovate clamp on part # 3728 12v Mini Vac pump Karlsson Robotics D2028 Brass 1/4 barb to 1/8 NPT 90 fitting 11/32 drill bit 1/8-27 tap 1/4" vinyl tubing - length however long you need to lay it in boat(cup holder ect) 3/8" soft copper tubing - length from approx tip to collector area within exhaust JB Weld - to adjoin copper to innovate clamp Wideband of your choice - I have an innovate mtx-L shown. The how to is basically self explanatory based on pics and the above... The pump serves 2 purposes: 1. Pull exhaust into chamber from sample location at end of the 3/8 copper (stinger). 2. Keep sensor dry. Insert copper thru tail pipe (put some hair around it if you have trouble) bending as you go to form copper. Clamp on holder piece. Plug in sensor. Run temp 12v to pump to turn on with wideband power up. Now you have air fuel data for tuning. The water near tail should be more than enough to keep vinyl hose from melting. Questions?? I spoke with Innovate about this very thing today and they recommended a pipe extension of no more than 2' of 1/2" copper tubing. I'm on the fence about buying their LM2 and using the exhaust clamp #3728 for carb tuning. Did this setup work well for you?

All well and good. But it sure looks complicated. If going that route I'd try to get the copper far enough in to avoid any reverted water. You could also just make some spacers that fit between the risers and manifolds for probably less money. Problem there would come if the top of the exhaust got too close to the engine cover. And someone running full on headers could probably spring for a bung to be welded in.
Another thing would be that you would have a lag between when the emissions pass out of the engine and when they get checked by the sensor. I'd say that you'd want to do some steady rpm readings to overcome that issue. Convince me. |
Getting the sample pipe far enough in to not encounter water in my boat will take atleast 3' of tubing which innovate wasn't very sure would work. They were concerned with a 1/2" extension tube that long not getting a good reading inside a 4" pipe (although the pipe isn't that big on my risers). Anyone else have any experience with this setup?

The setup works. Tested and good. I have about 3' extension of 3/8" Cooper. With the vac pump it is quite responsive (probably 1/2 second delay which is nothing to speak of really

After talking with Innovate I understand why you would use the vacuum pump. I'm still interested in one of these setups to use as a "tool" and not a permanent gauge. Seems like it would take all the guesswork out of tuning mid range and wot in a carb setup.

I received my LM2 and Lambda clamp, very anxious to try it out on the car!

You couldn't pay me to use an innovate wideband controller again. Nothing but problems with my LC1 and LM1 in the past. F'n things spent more time in the UPS truck for repairs than being used.
I have had good luck with the AEM setup, however. |
