Luckily mine were still mostly one piece but another season they would have come apart for sure. I would say anytime you buy a used 496 this should be baseline maintenance.

<Mine has never overheated but I think I will pull my caps at season's end and replace the gaskets just to make sure this doesn't become a problem. Wow...

The SAME problem can happen to 525EFI heat exchangers as well and the rest of the Mercury line up.

FYI extremely common for all Merc heat exchanger set ups. Posted this info as well up here a couple of years ago for someone having cooling issues with their closed cooled Merc app..

Also makes common for warning horn going off for exhaust over heat temp alarm and fault code. FYI for whomever

FYI on the Hardin stainless rebuildable pump. Ran the boat for the first time Sunday other than on a hose or simply backed into the lake on the trailer since the install last fall. Ran the snot out of it and unlike before I no longer get the 15 degree or so temp spike at idle after a hard run. Definitely flowing more water!

That's great. That's what I want to hear. Mine just arrived.

Here's pics of my heat exchanger gaskets, keep in mind this is with a very low hour 496 HO:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thinking I may not wait until fall to change them. Wow! I've got 425 hours/12 seasons on mine.

Just got back from buying parts: $60 peace of mind and pretty much the easiest thing you can do maintenance wise. It's just RIGHT THERE. I'd do it if I were you.

Still carried OK water pressure but after hard runs the water temp was creeping up more than it used to in the past. These pumps are also known to spit the shafts out without warning. The Hardin pumps have larger shafts/bearings.

Doing basic impeller changes this year and the shaft slid right out of the brass housing. Outter bearing siezed and the housing now becomes the bearing. Not a scuff in the brass where the bearing seized just nice and shiney.

I could not imagine that assembly coming out at 5000 rpm and bouncing arounder the bilge.

It happened to our neighbor with 600 hrs on his 496 H.O.s, it wasnt super ugly but could have been really bad. Luckily just scarred some parts in the bilge.
