Anodizing Carbs & Heads
 

I wanted to know if anyone has ever taken their carb apart and had it anodized. Also, what about purchasing regular aluminum heads and having them hard anodized. There is a local company that will do the carbs for $75 and heads for $100 each. Seems like it might be a good idea.

I dont think you will Anodize a Carb Body , the are generally cast from a Zinc-Aluminium alloy that will only turn a smutty black . You generally use a Chromate solution on the
carbs , they call it a conversion coating .

I agree, I don't think this would work - and if it did-- I'm guessing that with pretreating the metal and then adding the anodizing layer - is it possible that you would change the geometry enough to screw up fuel and air flow - yes it may look good - but looking good may not be so important when you are a few miles off shore.....

I can understand that. Just curious how the new Ultra series comes black. I would love mine to look like that because they are a polished carb right now that has the typical chalky white look now.

Remember the coating does add some amount of material.
Tapped holes either need to be blocked off or will be too small to get screws into.
Any dowel holes will be tightened up too.

What is the coating that is on most marine carbs?

Is that an iridite coating?

looked into doing the alum heads hard black. it was through the builder and it added quite a bit to the price. all the chambers had to be redone, redecked, valve job etc .

Not sure if this helps but I had my blowthrough carb powdercoated. Looked like new after 3 years of use... fuel spills on the coating never caused any degradation. Coating done by CSU carbs.

Tough to machine too. Time to have heads hard coated is from the manufacturer when bought new..

hARD ANODIZING last i knew was around 1000.00 fr a set of heads thats the millitary spec for marine use type.
Soft anodizing is much cheaper and dosent hold up as well by far. Hard anodizing has a draw back also as if is treated for too long the heads will become too soft and have to be trashed.
