Default 6.2 Mercruiser stall shifting gears

I have a 2002 6.2 Mercruiser that wants to stall while shifting into forward or reverse gear. When you go to make the shift the idle drops and it stalls out. Whats up with this? Think I herd of someone else having this problem years back on a old 70's Mercruiser and it was the shift intrupter switch or something like that. If you think this is my problem where is it located and how hard to fix. Is it a do it yourself type of job?

Definately agree if an Alpha.

6.2 should have a Bravo...so something engine related like IAC or something. And for some reason most people never clean the flame arrestor.

if it is an alpha, look at the bracket mounted on the right exhaust manifold with the 2 shift cables on it. the interrupter switch is right between the 2 cables. the switch is fine. lower cable is tight and won't let interrupt cable snap back to center. the interrupter is to shut off ignition for a split second to take load off drive so it can come out of gear. the tight cable makes the switch cut ign every time you shift. you will probably see the switch activate even when shifting with engine off which is a sure sign cable is shot.

I do believe its the AIC as well because the engine surges a lot aswell. I went to get one and it was like 306.00 plus tax but I read somewhere you can get them for cars at a much cheaper price!! Anyone know what car??

Check to seewhat part # your's is
www.Mercruiserparts.com

Then see if same as the 496's.

If so, do a search here, it's a Ford Part. Windstar or something.
