Blown 454s in big cruiser?
Found a pair of supposed 750HP dual carbed complete 454 mags with what look like Merc SC blowers on em (I am assuming they are 250s but not sure). Carb to pan to exhaust.
Question is this a disaster waiting to happen in a big cruiser with arneson drives, 10'6" beam, 40" length, no steps deep V hull, and somewhere around 15,000 lbs? Thinking of picking them up - getting blowers refreshed and pulleys sized for less boost as I dont think I need more than 600HP and could use the "safety factor" detonation-wise and adding a pair of oversized oil coolers I have 3x36". In a perfect world I could reuse my closed cooling but optional.....can just flush em each run. They are runners ... what should I get checked out? Speed goal is decent cruise in the 30's and top out at 50-plus. Not looking to make a poker runner. Too big and fat a vessel for blown 454s? Can borg warner 72's survive these or will I need new gears? |
Do it! I'm a fan of big azz boats that haul
Our Excal at 45' x 11' 8" 22,000lbs (according to travellift scale) is cruising at 45-47 topping out 54-55...turning heads and dropping jaws every time we go out, 11 tons o fun Theres one in greater Boston with big power and Arnesons running high 70's |
what power is in your Excal?

640hp/690tq

What RPM are you guys calling cruise? I would think as long as you let them spin and have low boost that this is an awesome idea. Given that it is a cruiser, look at your fuel system all the way to the bottom of the tank pickup. Not likely to be anything HP related there.

I have 1/2-inch from tank tube to mechanical fuel pumps now. Tubes in tanks are a bit smaller 3/8? No anti-syphons (dont tell)

For me 3900-4000ish

Is this for a Magnum? If so, bad ass.
