I think your path forward depends on 2-3 things...

1. Tinkering with a used motor vs. buying a new drop in motor and go
2. Performance
3. Cost

which ones matter to you...?

Unfortunately the right path is neither easy or cheap. Spend the money put in the time. Why? Junk breeds Junk.

One (of many) explanation for the valve issue is detonation. It super heats the combustion temperature and the does what is called "tulip". The valve head starts to cup like a tulip, now it is longer and hit the piston. Game over. This can be caused by over propping, poor fuel (old, cheap ect.), water intrusion or lack of proper maintenance.

The peanut motor will work. The 330 merc IS a peanut motor. Your stuff all came orig on peanut heads. Your raw water pump. Does it look like this? With a mech fuel pump on it? https://m.ebay.com/itm/RAW-SEA-WATER...ox!08093!US!-1 it will be sticking straight up. If so, you have no fuel pump issue and yours is the same engine. Different cam, but not that different.

Yes, that is the exact same water pump I have with a fuel pump attached to it. So sounds like that motor listed locally will work as a perfect swap - basically just put on my intake, exhaust manifolds, risers, carb, distributor, and it should be good - is that right.

Should I be concerned that he said the compression is only 105 per cyclinder - his excuse is that the engine has been sitting for 2 years and the cylinders/pistons are dry and thus the rings aren't seated great - he said once it gets running and oil circulates that the rings will seat better and I should get 130+ on each - does this make sense?

Thanks

You can always do rings and bearings. Would be a couple hundred extra in parts. What prop you running and what was full throttle RPM?

The seller seems to be pretty honest. If compression is 105 across all holes then your good to go. Compression and leak down tests are suppose to be done when warm for this reason.

I was running with my 19P, at when it overheated was doing 4000rpm without pulling anyone - just had my son and i in the boat. The 19P was good for me as I could get it to 4500 if WOT.

Still not sure why the valve stem broke - where it broke is has a 1" black mark throughout - does this imply it burnt? Or could it just be wear and tear and these valves and stems were old, being I bought the heads used with these valves and stems on them and I didn't replace them when I put the heads on my boat last year?

Thanks

Thanks for the confirmation - I sent him an offer of $400 but will likely buy it even if he wants more - I spoke with him quickly yesterday and he said he would do $500 - even if I pay $500 sounds like a good deal for an assembled 454 up to the heads. Thanks
