Which harmonic balancer?

Good morning.

Merc 454 Mag going 177 blower. Looking to replace old dried out balancer. What do you smart guys recommend? Motor will never see 5000 rpm.

Thanks!

I've been told by many reputable motor builders to stay away from Liquid filled balancers. Boats sit to long and the liquid will settle which in turn will break the snout off the crank.

Bajaorlando 09-04-2018 12:28 PM

I used these and they were of good quality

Excuse me for a second since I have known and helped swampy for prob over 12 years. Swampy, Don't get the dampners linked just above my post. A bunch have separated and flown across dyno rooms even. Doh !

Swamp, are your current 454's mark IV, gen V or Gen VI.

abones 09-04-2018 12:51 PM

Has any one had issues with stock GMPD Dampners? for 5K and under use..

Before the engine or car or boat ever ran and went somewhere. It's the Ebay way. 5 stars ! Looks great.I'm sure will work as great. Quick shipping ! :)

This is what I’m running on gen 6 502s. Recommended by Joe (mild thunder) timing marks all the way around and seems like a nice piece so far.

Also run the same brand on my Mark IV 555. Nice piece for the price.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9555025409.jpg

You’d need that before balancing a Gen vi yes?

F-2 Speedy 09-04-2018 05:53 PM

Yes, if you're staying externally balanced, if you're internal then get a neutral balancer

this is a direct replacement for a stock gen vi. If your doing a full custom rotating assembly it may change. I would talk with bullder.

BUP 09-04-2018 08:49 PM

depending on the build and balance --- 1 ATI balancers and then Power bond balancers by Dayco or vise versa. I believe dayco bought powerbond

Baja Rooster 09-04-2018 09:08 PM

Yea, I’ve already had it internally balanced when the shop put the shortblock together. That one just looks so much nicer though. Lol

mike tkach 09-04-2018 10:47 PM

fluidamper is my favorite but i have used the sfi approved powerbond balancer and i like them,a quality part at a fair price.

MILD THUNDER 09-05-2018 08:24 AM

The powerbond ones are on my engines and Icdedppl's. They are a nice piece for the money. In your case, I'd go with those. Nice upgrade over the stock GM balancer. I had mine spun balanced and weight checked, and they were basically dead nuts to the GM ones I was replacing. Being a counterweighted unit, I didnt want to just bolt it on and go, so I paid to have them checked before install.

Of course ATI and Fluidampers are a step above, hard to go wrong with either of them.

BUP 09-05-2018 10:09 AM

Man if you are leaking any oil on to your stock balancers it seems overtime to cause an issue with a spun section and or the rubber will start coming apart.

actionmarineguy 09-05-2018 11:37 AM

Fluidamper used on every build for 30years must paint light even coat. if balancing damper must be removed from hub when balancing.

Swamplizard 09-05-2018 03:09 PM

Mark IV

getrdunn 09-05-2018 08:09 PM

I've got two tci neutrality balanced I'd sell but it sounds like your staying externally balanced. The powerbond ones are what I'd be looking at if I were you. Nice proven piece and good price.

No...ran for years and still do..

Swamplizard 09-06-2018 07:28 AM

i run boat weekly - year round (FL) - I was leaning toward Fluid Dampers until I saw the above.... now I'm waffling. Which ones specifically for a reasonably priced damper for a basically stock 454 mag? Keep in mind these wont see 5000 rpms.

Disturbing Behavior 09-16-2018 02:13 PM

ATI hands down.

Totally agree with the ATI like above ^^^^^^^^^ in post # 23 states.

Baja Rooster 09-17-2018 01:05 AM

On an internally balanced engine should a damper fail do you need to pull the thing apart to balance again with a new unit?

The 540 ci 600 hp Volvo engines used GM dampeners. That being said, I dont know if they had issues with them.

Baja Rooster 09-20-2018 11:27 PM

I’ve alread had my 509 balanced with the flywheel and balancer. Is it possible to switch out the balancer at this point?

I was in the same boat. I was worried about the balance issue being an external balance setup. Took my new powerbond balancers in along with my original gm balancers to the machine shop. They were within a C hair from each other. Was kind of a waste of money, but at least it made me feel better when buzzing along at 6k.

Baja Rooster 09-21-2018 11:33 AM

That’s good to know, MT. From what I’ve read on the internetz unless a machine shop modified the balancer instead of the crank to balance the assembly the units are pretty standardized.

mike tkach 09-21-2018 09:48 PM

the factory gm balancer for your 5000 rpm application is fine.what happens to them is with years of use the rubber will break down, that can be a big problem.

MILD THUNDER 09-21-2018 10:45 PM

I agree with mike. Mine were old, and the rubber wasnt looking the best. Plus im driving a blower off it, and the idea of a steel hub balancer just made sense . Other than that, i never had any issues with the stock gm balancers.

Yea, but it looks cool! I’ll stick with the stocker. It may see 5600rpm on occasion but not often. The bigger plus of the new damper is the timing marks. I can’t seem to keep the timing tapes on for very long.
