All of the power gains are to be found in the head with compression and cam being a factor to support it, not the other way around. I’m a complete hack, but that’s my understanding of it. |
Never understand guys that don't realize the importance of good head. :)

if you go from 9-1 to 10-1 you could see as much as 40 hp without any other changes.that being said, one engine making an extra 40 hp might see a one mph gain in top speed.

The HP500 carb cam is not that great to start with.
You would probably gain as much or more hp by swapping to Crane 168741 cam and leaving the CR where its at. |
Thanks for all the input. I live in europe and aluminium heads are like 4000 dollars so that’s out of budget. I think I’ll just stay with my flat pistons and zero deck the block to get 9:1 CR or maybe a little bit more. The ignition and everything else is HP500 original so maybe it’s better to stay there and save money for a 540 with good heads. I bought my formula 271 fastech from floria 2 years ago and shiped it over here. |

Depending on your goals and personal opinion I prefer to purchase a non cnc head and let your head guy work his magic and do your porting and set up your heads for your particular app. Not only can you blow away the cnc head flow numbers you can pick up and bolt on with confidence and in many cases with less runner CC's. Price might be a tad more but worthy and proven. My experience anyway. |
