Oil and PS Cooler
Removing a mostly stock 502 mpi and replacing with a a built 555 making 650 ish HP.
Question is reusing the stock cooler that’s on the old motor now ( mercury ) or go aftermarket? |
You definitely want bigger and my guess would be at least a 3x18” but give Mr. Cool a call and he could spec it out. I can’t stress enough to go big and put a thermostat on it. I had to reinvent my system a couple times as I upgraded power and it is the biggest pain in the arse and expensive. Oversize and use a thermostat. |
10 or 12 qt pan won’t hurt either. |
If interested I've got two 3" x 19 1/2" engine/ps combo in the swap. Very clean inside and out. Were cooling 700 hp engines with no problems what so ever. |

Have a 530HP 509 in a very heavy boat. Went from 8x2 which was roasting the oil, to 18x2 which could not run for more then 15 minutes cruising before oil was getting to hot. Changed to 2.75x18 and now I can run all day and WOT without issues. Don't have a thermostat, but the guys above have the answers for you, mine is just some info
Have a separate small cooler for PS and it has been fine though out |

Oversize and use a thermostat is good advice. I may be in the minority here, but Mr. Cool is so-so advice.

I have a 555 with about the same HP and use the thermostatically controlled unit from Diamond. Have had no issueshttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6b85c26183.jpg
