My engine is closed cooled.
the raw water side has the pressure gauge between the seapump and the first cooler.
I dont see why water pressure couldnt be taken using the drain plug on a cooler, second pic.

Heres an adjustable option for a water pick up.

outonsafari
thanks for the picture
yes that would be good move to install pressure gauge on incoming hose into engine cooler

seems have to cut another hole in hull or move to transom pickup (any more holes and I'll be going for the submarine look)
looks like I can position the water pickup approx. 100mm (or closer) inside transom between transom and Z-drive cross member brace
The transom is 70mm thick

Not sure how can improve the sea strainer as it has 1.25" bottom in coming connection and then filters through vertical gauze to the outside of strainer then 1" hose connection to raw sea water pump
Have yet to make a decision on what to use
1. Have a mercruiser pump here
2. Have Jabsco crank mounted pump here
3. or alternative

Have mounted engine cooler 3"x18" on Port side of stringer rail, although picture shows it on starboard side

the sea strainer coming into picture on RH side

I dont think you have to move the pickup.
Team archer is right about plumbing it into the side and using the bottom to supply the engine.

Just doing that solves the issue of moving either the strainer or pickup.
90 degree npt/ hose barb on the bottom of the strainer pointed right at the seapump.

The ball valve on the intake should stay in place, close the valve and use the garden hose fitting on top of the strainer to run the engine when the boat is on the trailer.

Dont worry about changing or modifying the intake unless or until it doesnt provide consistent water.

Which seapump to use will depend on what belts and accessories are going on the engine, as always pictures help getting things sorted out.

At present there is 1" barbed hose fitting coming inside side of strainer
I'm assuming would be good idea to upgrade this connection to 1.25" all the way through to the sea pump?
In which case the 1" fitting comes off and will weld on 1.25" fitting?

What is the correct height the strainer should be located from the hull and water line
I'm assuming in most cases the sea pump will be lower than the sea strainer, and therefore will have sea water in hose between seapump and strainer, so pump wont run dry when engine starts, or is it best practice to place a non-return valve inline to keep the bump primed?

Brett you have to feed the strainer water in thru the fitting in the side and out to the engine thru the bottom fitting that gives you the most area on the screen in the strainer . And yes you should up size the hose to 1.25 inches.and don't not put a one way valve in the feed hose that's just asking for trouble. Regards Dan

Dan
okay got it, I'll upgrade to the 1.25" side entry

how low can strainer sit?
If I move the hoses around I could probably lower the height another 3"
this picture maybe clearer

The lower the better that way the water pump doesn't have too work so hard pulling the water up and thru the strainer. Regards Dan

Default Water pressure between strainer and pump

so getting hose fittings and joiners together for strainer -pump-HX
can someone advise what water pressure is ideal between the sea strainer and sea pump

if you’re all running water pressure gauges what water pressure reading do you see at maximum speed ?

also is it wise to T in a pressure valve between strainer and punp this way if pressure jumps we can dump the excess water and released pressure over the side through a pop off valve
I see Hardin sale a couple different pressure relief valves which can be regulated
not sure how this his done

I always run the pressure gauge after the water pump and the max I like to see is about 20 to 25 LBS I have pressure relief valves mounted to the sea strainer up high near the top. Regards Dan
